Mosaic Art Horse Head

This Mosaic Art Horse Head project is very messy but the kids love it! It’s super easy to make yet each one of them is unique just like the kids!

Easy to make Mosaic Horse Head

It’s very similar to the horse collage but uses tissue paper squares instead of magazine clippings.

A few more really cool options that you can use for this project are these incredible fabric mosaic squares and these colorful round circles. Or combine a couple of these for an extra special display!

Getting Started

Using a horse head template, you simply have the kids pick out 3 colors for the background and 3 different colors for the horse.

Or mix it up and use solid colors for the background and patterns for the horse or vice versa. You could try using retangles for the background and the circles for the horse. There’s so many different ways that you can do this horse craft which is why it’s so great.

Making the mosaic art horse head is made by layering the different colors randomly around the paper. That’s why these end up looking so creative.

Next comes the messy part – GLUE.

Start gluing the mosaic tiles in place

There’s a few different ways that you can have the kids spread the glue on.

They can use brushes to brush the glue on or they can use their fingers. Either way, there will most likely be glue everywhere by the time they finish!

I usually buy the big value bags of brushes that include both regular brushes and foam brushes. Stencil brushes are a little thicker and work great too. These are inexpensive enough that I can just throw them away when they’re finished rather than spending hours trying to get the glue out.

However, if your budget is tight or you don’t want to waste money by throwing them away, make sure that the glue you’re using is water soluble so they’re easier to clean.

Using 3 colors for the background and 3 colors for the horse, you'll have a beautiful mosaic horse head in no time!

Gluing the mosaic tiles down works best when you spread the glue on the paper first and then put some of the tiles down. Then put glue overlapping some of those tiles and add another layer of tiles. It’s okay if there’s background paper showing through the tiles.

Let the kids know that they don’t have to worry about the tissue paper going over the edges of the paper.

Once all of the mosaic tiles are in place, simply cut around the edges and the project will have a nice, finished look.

Every Mosaic Horse Head will turn out unique and original!

Note to 4-H Members:

You can use this craft idea in a couple different projects but make sure to check your county fair guidelines to see if it fits the requirements for the project you’re doing.  All localities are a little different.

  • Arts and Crafts – Any item.
  • Horseless Horse – Any horse related item
  • Scrapbooking – You can print up your own pictures. Make them 1″ x 1″ and then use them as the tiles.  Add some embellishments or writing around the picture.  Then put it in a frame.
  • Home decor – Frame it and use it as a wall hanging.
